Cotton vs TPU Sieve Cleaner: A Practical Comparison

2026-03-05 · Technical

Sieve cleaners keep plansifter screens clear, and the cotton-versus-TPU choice is one of the first decisions a mill makes when ordering replacements. Both work; they suit different frames, budgets and maintenance habits. Here is a practical comparison based on how mills actually use them.

Material and contact behaviour

Cotton cleaners are made from textile pads — our CC series is 100% cotton and the CP series 80% cotton — with a chrome-plated metal slider. They sit gently against the screen and suit traditional sieve frames. TPU cleaners use flexible studs or bristles on a TPU body, available in triangular, arm, rectangular, diamond and cross types, which distribute cleaning pressure differently across the mesh.

Wear life and maintenance

In abrasive service, TPU studs generally hold their shape longer, which means fewer change-outs over a season. Cotton pads are simpler to replace and are a proven option where the frame was designed for textile pads. The right answer depends on the sieve frame, mesh opening and the material being screened.

Food contact and documentation

For flour milling, food-grade compliance is often a purchasing requirement. We can provide food contact documentation for the TPU range on request. Cotton pads, being a natural fibre product, are widely used in food plants as well — confirm which documentation your market requires and we will include it with the quotation.

Not sure which family fits your plansifter? Send the frame size, mesh opening and a photo of the current cleaner. We will identify the closest model before you order.
